4-H Project Judging – Part 1.
First of, a big THANK YOU! to the folks at http://stanford.wellsphere.com/wellmix360/beet-pulp for adding my post on feeding Beet Pulp. It just made my day to find that!
And on to 4-H.
I did really well this year, pulling in ALL ‘A’ (Blue) ribbons, and proudly collecting 2 State Fair Delegates, and 5 State Fair alternates.
Once my Projects are returned, I will make sure to get pictures up.
I entered nine projects…here’s a quick run down!

HORSE – ANIMAL SCIENCE
Project Name – STRANGLES
This was one of my two State Fair Delegated projects. I did a Tri-fold board, and the judges loved it.
Strangles is the common name for Equine Distemper. It is very contagious, but, it is rare that this disease will kill your horse.
The best treatment for strangles is education.
Prevent it! Fight it BEFORE it get to your barn!
~ NEVER wear your barn shoes to an unfamiliar barn
~ ALWAYS wash your hands after touching an unfamiliar horse
~ ALWAYS quarantine a new horse in your barn for at least a month.
~ KNOW THE SIGNS, and KEEP AWAY FROM HORSES POSSESSING THEM. Signs include a runny nose, high fever, a deep, wet sounding cough, reluctance to eat or drink, lumps on the bottom of the jaw and a general listless attitude.
JOURNALISM
I also was Delegated in this Project.
This project, there is not so much to tell. I had to keep a portfolio of all of the activities I did in the 4H year that involved Journalism. While it was fun, it seemed to be mostly about cutting out News Articles and pasting them in a notebook.
VISUAL ARTS – 3-D DESIGN
Project Name – IKEBANA
I was an Alternate in this project.
This was probably my favorite project. I took some Pop cans, three sticks, a sour cream container, and some palster of paris, and made one of these -

So what is Ikebana?
It is an Ancient Japanese art of flower arrangement. What distinguishes Ikebana from other approaches to flower arrangement is its asymmetrical form and the use of empty space as an essential feature of the composition. A sense of harmony among the materials, the container, and the setting is also crucial.
The best part, to me, about this art form, is choosing the meaning. Full blooms represent the past, half blooms represent the present, and, you guessed it, buds represent the future.
My Ikebana consisted of three full blooms, and six buds. If you want to know more, check out Ikebana International, at http://www.ikebanahq.org/
VISUAL ARTS – NATURE
PROJECT NAME – GRAPEVINE WREATH
![]()
This is what my wreath looked like, except I added some Christmas-y things to it to add to the year-round appeal. I picked the vines my self, and even though I was not delegated in this project, I am very proud of it.

VISUAL ARTS – PAPER
PROJECT NAMES – COLLAGE & STAR
These didn’t get delegated either. Actully, the collage ended up being un original, making it not able to go to state anyway. But it’s okay. It was a collage of magizine picture, of old and new things, or tradition meeting the future.
As for my star, it was a simple (VERY simple) Kirigami cut.

Kirigami is a variation of Origami where the artist is allowed to make small cuts in the paper. The word KIRIGAMI is derived from the Japanese words ‘kiri’, meanig to cut, and ‘gami’, meaning paper.
And guess what? You’ve probably made a Kirigami before – ever cut those paper snowflakes around Christmas? TADA!! You’re such a talented lil’ artist.

VISUAL ARTS – GLASS
PROJECT NAME – MOSAIC JAR
State Fair Alternate
We all know what mosaics are. This one was a little glass jar mosaiced with Green glass tiles, and with some wire and pretty little beads woven around it.
Sorry, but that’s about it for this until I get it back and can take a picture.
Well, it’s close to 11 pm and I must sleep. I will try and get the other projects up tomorrow!
